Tarangire is Tanzania's great dry-season park: as seasonal waterholes vanish, the Tarangire River becomes the only reliable water for miles, and animals stream in from the wider ecosystem. What wildlife will I see, and why are Tarangire's elephants famous?
Elephants are the headline act. Tarangire is celebrated for some of the largest elephant herds in Africa, family groups that can merge into gatherings of several hundred along the river in the dry season. Watching them dig for water in the sandy riverbed, calves wobbling between the legs of the matriarchs, is the park's signature scene. Around them move buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, impala and warthog in dry-season numbers, with lion prides working the river line, leopard draped in the sausage trees and cheetah hunting the open southern plains.
Then there are the baobabs.
