The Ideal 7-Day Tanzania Itinerary, Day by Day
Five days of safari, two of Indian Ocean, with the driving times no one prints.
The ideal seven-day Tanzania itinerary splits the week five and two: five days on the northern safari circuit, two on Zanzibar. Day 1, land at Kilimanjaro International (JRO) and sleep in Arusha. Day 2, game-drive Tarangire, about two hours' drive away. Days 3–4, the central Serengeti (Seronera), where resident big cats make sightings reliable year-round. Day 5, descend into Ngorongoro Crater at dawn, then drive back to Arusha. Days 6–7, fly to Zanzibar for Stone Town and a beach morning before your flight home.
It is a fast week, expect four to five hours in the vehicle on the longest transfer days, but it covers Tanzania's three heavyweight sights without ever feeling like a checklist. What does the day-by-day plan look like?
Days 1–2: Arusha and Tarangire. Land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), meet your driver-guide, and transfer roughly an hour into Arusha to shake off the flight. Request current room options for your date. On day 2 you drive about two hours south-west to Tarangire National Park, spend the day among its giant baobabs and famously large elephant herds, and overnight near the park gate so day 3 can start early.
Days 3–4: the central Serengeti. Day 3 is the big transfer, four to five hours from Tarangire up over the Ngorongoro highlands and down into the Serengeti, with the last stretch doubling as a game drive once you clear Naabi Hill gate. Many first-time itineraries use Seronera, in the park's centre, because its river valleys support resident wildlife throughout the year rather than depending entirely on the migration's location. Day 4 is a full day on game drives, dawn to dusk.
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater. Leave the Serengeti early and descend into Ngorongoro Crater soon after the gates open, when the light and predator activity are at their best. The caldera floor, roughly 260 km², per the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, concentrates lion, elephant, buffalo and one of East Africa's better chances of black rhino. Climb out by early afternoon, pause at the rim viewpoint, then drive the last three to four hours back to Arusha for the night.
Days 6–7: Zanzibar. A morning flight of around 90 minutes takes you from Arusha to Zanzibar. Spend the afternoon in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, walking the old Swahili trading quarter, then transfer to a beach hotel on the north or east coast. Day 7 is yours until the onward flight from Abeid Amani Karume International; many travellers connect home the same evening via Dar es Salaam or the Gulf hubs.
How long are the driving days, really?
Be honest with yourself about the distances, because brochures rarely are. Arusha to Tarangire is about two hours on good tarmac. Tarangire to Seronera is the long one: four to five hours, with the final stretch on corrugated gravel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The crater rim to central Serengeti runs around three hours, and Ngorongoro's descent and ascent roads add time either side of your crater hours. None of it is dead time, you cross the highlands, pass Maasai bomas, and usually see game from the road well before any park gate.
If the driving worries you, a fly-in alternative can replace the longest road legs with light-aircraft hops into Seronera airstrip. It costs more and remains subject to current schedules and availability, but it can preserve more time for game viewing on a seven-day itinerary.
What is the pure-safari version of this week?
Skip Zanzibar and give both days back to the bush. From roughly December to March, spend days 6–7 in the Ndutu area on the southern Serengeti plains, where the wildebeest calving season concentrates the herds, and the predators that follow them, into a compact, dramatic arena. Outside calving season we would rather add a third Seronera night and a stop at Lake Manyara, whose groundwater forest and famous tree-climbing lions make an easy half-day on the drive back to Arusha.
Either way, consider ending day 7 in Arusha rather than rushing for the airport: a pure-safari week cuts two flights from the budget and can leave time for a cultural day tour, coffee farm, Lake Duluti or the Maasai markets before an evening departure out of JRO. What is the beach-heavy version?
Compress the safari to three days and give Zanzibar four nights. Days 1–3: arrive, game-drive Tarangire, then Ngorongoro Crater with a night on the rim. Day 4: morning flight to the island. Spend two nights in Stone Town, spice tour, Forodhani night market, the carved doors of the old quarter, then two on the north or east coast beaches. Divers can swap the island entirely for Mafia Island, whose marine park runs a whale-shark season from roughly October to February. This split suits honeymoons well: the safari still delivers the crater and the elephants, but the week finally breathes.

When should I book, and how does the ticketing work?
Book international fares into Kilimanjaro (JRO) two to four months out as a rule of thumb, and earlier still for June–October and the Christmas weeks. Demand is real: Tanzania recorded 2,141,895 international arrivals in 2024, up 18.5% on 2023, per the Bank of Tanzania's 2024 International Visitors' Exit Survey, and peak-season lodges and the small domestic aircraft to Zanzibar genuinely sell out. Ticket the Arusha–Zanzibar hop at the same time as the safari, not as an afterthought.

Is seven days enough for both safari and Zanzibar?
Yes, with honest expectations. Five safari days cover Tarangire, the central Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater comfortably; two Zanzibar days give you Stone Town and one proper beach morning. If you want the island to feel unhurried, take the beach-heavy split with four Zanzibar nights, or stretch the whole trip to nine or ten days.
How do I get from the safari to Zanzibar?
The standard routing is a drive back to Arusha after Ngorongoro Crater, a night in town, then a flight to Zanzibar. In season, light aircraft may also fly from Serengeti airstrips towards the coast. Either routing can be requested in one itinerary, with every flight retaining its own supplier-confirmation and ticket status.
What does a seven-day Tanzania trip cost per person?

Most nationalities do. The ordinary single-entry visa costs $50, while US passport holders pay $100 for a multiple-entry visa; you can apply through Tanzania's official eVisa system in advance or, for many nationalities, obtain it on arrival.
